What Does Root Canal Treatment Do?
Root canal treatment addresses inflamed or infected tissue inside a tooth. The affected pulp is removed, the internal spaces are cleaned and shaped, and the canals are filled and sealed. The aim is to retain a tooth that can be restored rather than automatically replace it.
Why the Pulp Needs Treatment
Inside each tooth is the pulp, soft tissue containing blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. It becomes inflamed or infected after deep decay, repeated dental work, a crack or an injury. Left untreated, the infection can lead to an abscess.
The Stages of Treatment
The American Association of Endodontists describes the treatment in stages. The tooth is examined with X-rays, numbed with local anaesthetic and isolated with a protective sheet called a dental dam. An opening is made in the crown, the pulp is removed, and the canals are cleaned and shaped. The space is then filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha, sealed, and closed with a temporary filling. Many treatments need one or two appointments.
An Assessment Comes Before the Procedure
A tooth’s symptoms do not establish the treatment by themselves. Use the assessment to understand the diagnosis, why root canal treatment is being considered and whether the tooth is suitable for restoration. Ask which options are available and what each is intended to achieve.
If the tooth has already been treated, tell the clinician and ask how that changes the investigation. A discussion about a previously treated tooth should identify what is known, what remains uncertain and which next step is being recommended.
The Root Filling and Final Restoration Are Different Stages
After the canals have been treated, the tooth needs an appropriate restoration. This may involve a crown or another restoration, depending on the tooth and the case. Temporary work is not a substitute for completing the agreed restorative plan. A crown or permanent filling protects the tooth from fracture and reinfection, so avoid biting on hard food with it until that restoration is in place.
Questions About Comfort and Recovery
Sensitivity or discomfort can occur after treatment. Follow the treating clinician’s instructions and ask how to obtain advice if symptoms persist or change. A successful result cannot be guaranteed; further treatment may sometimes be needed.

Is a crown included in root canal treatment?
Do not assume it is. Ask whether the tooth needs a crown or another restoration afterwards, why that is recommended and whether the estimate includes it. The final restoration should be visible in the plan.
